CHAPTER 9

Two hours later, Arnold and Otto exited the library and made their way back to the reception area, where they found Raine packing up to finish for the day.

She switched off her computer and stood up to put her long, light pink coat on. “Have you boys all finished? I’m not going to lie, you were both very entertaining on the CCTV.” She chuckled to herself as she picked her bag up and slung it over her shoulder. Arnold immediately felt his cheeks grow hot.

“If you’re looking for your dad, he is in his office waiting to take you both home. I will see you both on Monday. Have a nice weekend!” She waved at them as she walked through the front door, and the boys headed to Bernard’s office, remembering their way from the first time they had arrived at the Spirit Wardens.

Without knocking, Arnold burst into his dad’s office. “I’ve found something, Dad!” he exclaimed, not wanting to waste any time.

Bernard looked a bit exasperated as if he wanted to scold Arnold for his lack of manners, but seemed to change his mind. “About your spirit beast?” he replied instead.

“It’s about the scarred man,” Otto declared.

“The scarred man? How?”

Arnold placed the book on his dad’s desk, opening it to the page with the drawing of the dagger.

Bernard studied the picture for a short while before lifting his head to look at Arnold expectantly. “What is this?” he asked.

“It’s the blade that I saw that night! This was the blade that the scarred man had,” Arnold proclaimed.

“Are you sure?” his dad fired back. “Let me see that.” He grabbed the book and flicked through the pages.

“I’m sure of it, Dad, that’s the blade he was carrying.”

“If this is true, then he is in possession of an ancient artefact.”

“I know what I saw. I saw this blade in his hands. I saw him trying to absorb Charles’s spirit beasts with it.” Arnold turned the pages over to the paragraph he had read. “What are the lions of the Aether?”

“The lions of the Aether?” Bernard questioned.

“Yes, read that paragraph,” Arnold said, pointing. “Betsy Devon mentions them.”

Bernard was silent for a moment as he read the journal entry. “It’s a true story,” he said when he had finished. “Well, part of it is. You see, there are many myths about the lions of the Aether, but they were never found to be true.”

Arnold and Otto sat down on the chairs opposite his dad’s desk, both completely drawn in to the conversation and both equally fascinated by what they were about to be told.

Bernard began to go into detail around what he knew. “The lions of the Aether were two man-hunting lions said to have terrorised workers who were building a new railway line in Africa in the late 1800s. These lions were larger than usual, more powerful, and so the stories say, they were spirit beasts untethered to a human anchor.”

“That’s pretty cool.” Otto’s eyes were wide as he listened intently to the story.
